1. Canada - Brain Beat Dance:
Memory & Brain Beat Dance
According to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, one out of every 20 Canadians over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. Aging is the most common risk factor. Aerobic exercise and social stimulation are some of the healthy lifestyles that help the situation. As people age, it is beneficial to regularly exercise the brain and body in an attempt to protect oneself from premature aging. For centuries, dance has been recognized as a means of expressing oneself, celebrating life, or performing ritualistic healing. Dance is increasingly accepted as a way to help work through one's problems. It can also be used to the help those with Alzheimer.
Brain Beat Dance (BBD) is a form of social dance with different choreography composed by experienced dance expert designed figures and explaination and special teaching methods to lead the learners easy fall into a learning process to the tune of international music. Besides the familiar line dance, folk dance, square dance and round dance is also common in the BBD. Dance routines are composed in such a way that dancers greet and exchange partners in most dances while moving rhythmically to great music. BBD originated from Germany about 30 years ago and has expounded to include Seat Dance which gives those confined to wheelchairs an opportunity to dance. This is particularly welcome by institutionalized seniors and handicaps. This form of BBD Seat Dance usually carries a theme or use intruments through tools for the instructor to relate to the audience for therapy training. Sing Dance is a dance without music for any location specially for recall the beautifull memories. Extensive work has also been done to include choreography for different ages so the whole family can enjoy the dance.
For seniors and handicaps, Brain Beat Dance not only stimulates interest in life, it helps to form social bonding and meets the emotional and physical needs of this vulnerable group. It is also an excellent tool to provide exercise and sports for the brain and body. Brain Beat Dancers are encouraged to memorize the dance routines so as to train their short-term memory. In 2004, Ms Rainbow Yuen, Brain Beat Dance founder, who is also a senior instructor of The Federal German Senior Dance Association started BBD in the Chinese community in Toronto by training instructors for beginners. Since then, numerous classes have been organized in the Chinese community to teach seniors using dance to beat the deterioration of brains.
